Ingredients in Layered Oreo Pudding Dessert

Oreo cookies – Use a 16 oz. package of regular Oreos. There are 45 Oreos in a 16 ounce package, which is helpful to know if you have a different sized package.

Butter – Make sure the butter is melted before adding to the recipe. I like to melt butter in the microwave because it is so fast, but you can do it over the stove in a saucepan if you prefer!

Cream cheese – The cream cheese needs to be softened to room temperature – don’t skip this step! This can be done by setting the cream cheese on the counter for about 15-20 minutes or in the microwave for about 20-30 seconds.

Powdered sugar – It’s easiest to buy your powdered sugar (aka confectioners sugar) from the store, but if you run out, it’s pretty easy to make your own by placing granulated sugar in the blender and blending until it looks like powdered sugar! I’ve done this a few times in a pinch and it works well!

Instant pudding – You will need a small package of vanilla pudding and a small package of chocolate pudding. Make sure to use instant pudding for this recipe!

Cool Whip – Use a big one (16 oz) and make sure it is thawed to room temperature as well. Cool Whip is the best whipped topping to use, but if you live in a place where they don’t have it or you prefer not to use it, you can make your own stabilized whipped cream. It’s easy to do and all of the instructions are found below the recipe on this page.

Chocolate syrup – You will need 8 ounces of chocolate syrup – feel free to use whatever kind is your favorite! You can use more of a fudge topping if you prefer, but you may need to microwave it for a little bit in order to make it runny enough to drizzle! Sometimes I like to add a little bit of caramel topping as well!

Milk –  You will need milk to make the pudding layers and can use pretty much any type of milk. Skim, 1% and 2% all work well, but you can also use a dairy-free alternative like soy milk or coconut milk and that should work fine too!

How to make Layered Oreo Pudding Dessert

Crumble 20 cookies (not super fine, but smallish pieces) and place in the bottom of a 9X13 pan. I usually crumble the cookies by placing them in a ziplock bag, letting the air out and then sealing the bag. Just use a rolling pin or a meat mallet to crush the cookies before opening the bag. If you use a blender, you will probably crush the Oreos too finely which would still work, but larger chunks are preferable for this recipe.

Pour melted butter evenly over the top. Bake for 20 minutes at 350°. Cool to room temperature.

Combine cream cheese and powdered sugar and mix until smooth. Fold in half of the Cool Whip. Spread over cooled crust. Drizzle half of the chocolate syrup over the top.

Crumble the rest of the Oreos and reserve about 1/2 cup of them to sprinkle on the top, but then use the rest of them to make the next layer.

Mix puddings with milk until thick. Layer over the cookie layer. Spread the remaining Cool Whip on top, drizzle the remaining chocolate syrup and sprinkle the reserved Oreo crumbs on top. Refrigerate until ready to serve.

HOW TO SOFTEN CREAM CHEESE

Cream cheese is easy to soften – you can set it out at room temperature or soften it more quickly in the microwave.

-To soften at room temperature more quickly, just set the cream cheese on a plate and cut into smaller pieces. The cream cheese should reach room temperature in about 15-20 minutes with this method.

-To soften the cream cheese in the microwave, remove the foil packaging and set the cream cheese in a small bowl or on a plate. Microwave for about 10-15 seconds. If the cream cheese is still cold and hard, continue to microwave for about 5 seconds at a time until the cream cheese is soft throughout. Just make sure not to microwave it too long or it will start to melt!

CAN YOU REPLACE THE COOL WHIP IN OREO DELIGHT?

If you can’t find Cool Whip where you live or you prefer not to use it in recipes, you can use stabilized whipped cream instead. If you just use regular whipped cream, the consistency will be too light and the cream will not hold up very well when mixed into the recipe. It’s very simple to make your own stabilized whipped cream and it just takes a few minutes!

See Homemade Whipped Cream recipes here.

To make stabilized whipped cream, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 4 ounces of cream cheese (softened to room temperature)
  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  1. Beat the cream cheese with the powdered sugar and vanilla until soft and smooth.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the whipping cream just until soft peaks form.
  3. Add the cream cheese mixture to the whipped cream and beat until stiff peaks are formed. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.

A little tip for making whipped cream faster. Use a metal bowl for whipping the cream and place the bowl in the freezer for about 30 minutes before you make the whipped cream. This will significantly decrease the amount of time that you will need to beat the whipped cream – the process will go much faster!
