Honestly, they could easily be both! Everyone loves orange juice and citrus at breakfast time because it’s so refreshing. But, orange creamsicle ice creams are a traditional and iconic dessert treat too! Serve your orange waffles for breakfast with fresh fruit and yogurt, or serve it as a dessert with a nice scoop of your favorite vanilla ice cream! You can’t go wrong with either!

How Do I Get a Crispy Waffle?

With a simple ingredient swap you can create a crisper waffle as an end result. For example, by using regular milk instead of buttermilk, you can go from a soft waffle to a crispy one! Other tips include watching your waffle maker and waiting a tad longer for that gorgeous golden color before removing the waffles!

Here’s what you’ll need to make these homemade waffles:

— flour: You can use all purpose for bread flour

–cornstarch, baking powder, sugar and salt: for texture and leavening the waffles

–2 eggs

–melted butter: I always use real salted butter!

–buttermilk: Buttermilk adds a richer flavor to waffles but it does make them softer. If you want crispier waffles, use regular milk

–vanilla extract

–grated orange zest &  fresh squeezed orange juice: You’ll get both zest & juice from 1 medium orange

Preheat your waffle iron.

In a small bowl, combine the dry ingredients and then set it aside.

Add the eggs to a separate mixing bowl and then whisk. Add in the melted butter, buttermilk, vanilla, orange zest and juice.

Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients and then whisk to combine. Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes, until the waffle iron is hot.

Depending on your waffle iron, pour in 1/4-1/3 cup of the waffle batter. Then cook according to your waffle iron directions.

Top with the warm Butter syrup and fresh fruit.

To make the butter syrup, place all of the ingredients (except for the baking soda) into a pot on the stove. Bring it to an almost boil, and then whisk in the baking soda. Remove the pot from the heat and let cool a little before pouring over your waffles.

What’s a Good Buttermilk Substitute?

If you don’t have any buttermilk handy, you can always do a DIY substitute. Simply use 1 cup of milk and 1 tbsp of lemon juice. Mix them in a separate bowl and let them sit for 5-10 minutes before using. The results will be similar, but not exactly the same as there is no true replacement for buttermilk.

How Can I Save Waffles For Later?

If you find yourself with leftovers you can always keep your syrup in a mason jar with a fitted lid. Store it in the fridge for up to a few weeks, reheating before using (it tastes best warm).

The waffles can be cooled completely and then stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week, or they can be frozen. to freeze them simply let them freeze solid on a baking sheet (about an hour) and then transfer to an airtight container or baggy for up to 3 months. Reheat and serve.
