Double Chocolate Banana Bread is my favorite way to eat banana bread. Everything is better with chocolate, right?! This is pretty much just a normal banana bread recipe with the addition of cocoa powder and chocolate chips, but adding the chocolate flavor with the bananas is a wonderful combination.

Can Double Chocolate Banana Bread be made into muffins?

Quick bread recipes make great muffins! Simply use my recipe above, then spoon 3 tablespoons of batter into each greased or lined muffin cup. Bake for 20-23 minutes at 350°.

There are several benefits of making quick bread into muffins. First, I like that they cook faster! Where a full loaf of banana bread bakes for almost an hour, the muffins bake for about 20 minutes, which is a fraction of the time. There’s no need to slice muffins either and of course, they’re very portable, so it’s easy to take them to a party or get-together. They’re also easy to freeze! I like to bake a batch of muffins and then freeze them just in a layer in a large ziplock freezer bag. I pull them out one or two at a time for breakfast. You can let them thaw on the countertop, or you can microwave them or toast them to heat them up.

Ingredients in Double Chocolate Banana Bread

Flour – Regular all-purpose flour works perfectly in quick breads and that’s what I usually use in this recipe. You can use wheat flour instead or a combination of white and wheat. Because of the cocoa and chocolate chips in the bread, my kids can’t even tell when I sneak wheat flour in there!

Sugar

Cocoa – Unsweetened baking cocoa is what gives the bread a rich, chocolate flavor. Any variety is fine – sometimes I use a dark chocolate cocoa powder and it works great too.

Baking soda, salt, baking powder – For best results, make sure that none of these are expired. If your bread is flat or too dense, chances are your baking soda or baking powder are a little bit past their prime!

Bananas – Can’t forget the bananas! You will need about 2-3 medium sized bananas. I just take the peel off and then smash the bananas with the back of a fork. If the bananas are ripe enough, they should be very easy to mash.

Oil – Any kind of baking oil is fine. Vegetable oil, canola oil, even coconut oil works great! You can swap some or all of this out with applesauce – the consistency of the bread will be slightly different, but the taste will be pretty much the same.

Egg

Chocolate Chips – I prefer semi-sweet, but milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips are good too. Mini chocolate chips work great in this recipe as well.

How to make Double Chocolate Banana Bread

Preheat oven to 325°.

In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, salt and baking powder.

In a small bowl, combine the bananas, oil and egg. Add the banana mixture to the dry ingredients and stir with a spoon just until barely combined.

Fold in chocolate chips. Pour into a greased 9X5 bread pan. Add a few more chocolate chips on top if desired.

Can Double Chocolate Banana bread be frozen?

I love freezing loaves of banana bread! How you prepare the bread for freezing really depends on how long you intent to keep it frozen. If you just want to freeze it for a week or two, I’d wrap it in plastic wrap or foil and place the loaf in a large freezer ziplock bag. Most often, when I bake bread to freeze it, I’ll bake mini loaves so that they fit in the ziplock bag easier. If you want to freeze it for 2-6 months, I’d wrap it more securely, making sure it’s airtight and wrapping it in a double layer of foil or plastic wrap, then place it in a ziplock bag.

If you are on the low carb diet and love garlic bread, then you MUST try this healthier keto cauliflower garlic bread alternative that I have found on Delish. It is naturally gluten free, full of flavours with fresh herbs and garlic and easy to make too. However, you can still taste the cauliflower here, so next time I would cut it back to half of what original recipe called for.

  • 360 g Riced cauliflower
  • 6 Large eggs, separated
  • 135 g Almond flour
  • 1 tbsp Baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp Sea salt
  • 80 g Unsalted butter, melted
  • 5 Garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp Chives, chopped
  • 1 tbsp Parsley, chopped
  1. Preheat oven to 180C/350F and line a standard-sized loaf pan with parchment paper.
  2. Place riced cauliflower in a microwave safe bowl, cover and microwave for 3 minutes until soft and tender. Let cool. When cool enough to handle, transfer cauliflower to a clean kitchen towel and squeeze to release as much moisture as possible.
  3. In a mixing bowl, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Set aside.
  4. In a large bowl, whisk together almond flour, baking powder, salt, egg yolks, melted butter, minced garlic and cauliflower. Fold in 1/3 of egg white to lighten up the batter, then fold in the rest of the egg white until well incorporated. Fold in fresh herbs.
  5. Pour the batter the prepared loaf pan. Bake in the middle of hot oven until the top is golden, about 50 minutes. Remove and turn out on a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Mini Cheese Ball Recipe

Cheese balls are one of my go-to appetizers.. both for making and eating. 😉 I love the smooth and tangy cheese layered on top of a crunchy cracker. It’s filling, but not overly so and all around just a great way to begin a meal, or, let’s be honest, BE a meal the next day.

There is only one thing that I am not quite on board with when it comes to cheese balls. The fact that everyone at the party is digging their crackers into the same cheese ball. Makes me cringe and maybe even shutter a little bit. That little reason right there is why this is my favorite way to make cheese balls. Miniature. Nearly bite-seized. Single serving cheese balls!

How to make an Easy Cheese Ball

This cheese ball recipe couldn’t be easier. Four ingredients (if you count the nuts on the outside!) is all you need. If you’d rather, you could make this into one large cheese ball, but I will be explaining how to make miniature, single serving cheese balls in this post.

To make the cheese ball mixture you will need on hand:

  • room temperature cream cheese
  • ranch dressing packet
  • shredded cheddar cheese

This is something I swear I can never remember to do ahead of time. (Please, tell me I’m not alone!) The best way I have found to bring it to room temperature quickly, is to lay the cold cream cheese in between two heating pads on low or microwaveable rice heating bags. When the cream cheese is sandwiched between two warm items, it usually only takes 5-10 minutes for it to come to room temperature.

mini cheeseball mixture before rolling into balls

To make the cheese ball mixture, it is as simple as using your stand mixer or electric hand mixer to mix cream cheese, ranch dressing mix and shredded cheese together. Once everything is mixed together, we will want to pop it in the fridge for 15-20 minutes to make it a bit easier to roll in the crushed almonds.

Use two spoons to drop approx 2 tbsp worth of mixture into a bowl of chopped or crushed almonds. (I usually use my blender to roughly chop them) once the cheese ball mixture is covered in almonds, it is easily rolled into a ball. Repeat with remaining mixture.

Do Cheese Balls need to be refrigerated?

Yes, this will need to be stored in the refrigerator to ensure proper food safety. If they are not currently being served, store in the refrigerator.

How long are Cheese Balls good for?

Cheese balls will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 5 days. For best results, store the cheese balls in an airtight container to avoid the cheese balls drying out.
