Tips for Making This Braided Bread Recipe

Unlike other yeast bread, this sweet bread is made using a baking sheet instead of a bread pan. Having your baking sheet lined with parchment paper helps to give a good bottom crust and makes clean up easier.

Topping the braided bread with turbinado sugar gives it a great way to add extra sweetness while making the bread look sparkly.

How is turbinado sugar different from regular sugar?

Turbinado sugar is a more natural brown sugar with more coarse granules and a darker coloration than regular sugar. The flavor is also a little different because it retains some of that natural plant flavor and molasses that more refined sugars lack.

How can you tell when the bread is fully baked?

Most bread needs to cook until they reach 190-200 degreed F. Bread recipes that contain milk need to reach 00 degrees, whereas those that don’t need to reach 190. This recipe doesn’t have milk, so you can pull it out of the oven once a digital thermometer reaches 190. The tops should be a nice golden brown color.

Why does my braided bread split?

This is often a result of your bread not being braided tightly enough, or the dough not being kneaded enough. With practice you should be able to get more comfortable with the dough and figuring out the right way to make a tight braid.

Braided Sweet Bread recipeHow to cut braided bread

Despite the different appearance, you can still slice your bread like normal using a bread knife. Making slices is a great way to serve the braided bread in multiple same sized pieces, but if you want to be creative and cut each lump to be its own piece, you can do that as well.

CHOCOLATE CHIP OATMEAL BREAD – Butter with a Side of Bread by Gordon Ramsay

CHOCOLATE CHIP OATMEAL BREAD - Butter with a Side of Bread

Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Bread is like a oatmeal chocolate chip cookie in bread form! This simple quick bread recipe is super easy to make and turns out perfectly soft and moist every time.

Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Bread is a popular after-school treat at my house. I love how easy it is to make and all of the ingredients are pretty basic and I usually have them on hand. I have always loved oatmeal and chocolate chips together and this bread is one of my favorite ways to enjoy that delicious combination.

Like oatmeal? So do we! Check out some of our favorite oatmeal recipes!

Ingredients in Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Bread

Oatmeal – I prefer to use rolled oats because I like the consistency of them better, but you can definitely use quick oats or even a combination of the two.

Buttermilk – This is something that I don’t always have on hand, but the buttermilk makes the consistency of the bread so amazing so don’t skip out on this! If you don’t have buttermilk, it’s super easy to make your own! Just add 1 Tbsp of white vinegar or lemon juice to 1 cup of milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes before adding to the recipe. Works great!

Egg

Brown Sugar – Not very much is added, but just enough to add the right amount of sweetness to the recipe.

Oil – You can use any type of oil you’d like. I usually use coconut oil when baking, but you can use vegetable or canola oil if you prefer. I’ve never tried this recipe with melted butter instead, but I’m sure it would work great too!

Flour – I always use all-purpose flour in quick bread recipes.

Baking powder, baking soda and salt – Just make sure that your baking soda and baking powder are fresh and not expired! If your bread is too dense or falls flat, a lot of times expired baking soda/baking powder is the culprit!

Chocolate Chips – I almost always make this bread with semi-sweet chocolate chips, but you can use milk chocolate chips or dark chocolate chips too! I like to use the mini chocolate chips as well, but it is definitely a matter of preference. All oatmeal bread tastes better with chocolate so you can’t go too wrong here, right?!

How to make Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Bread

Mix the oats, buttermilk, egg, brown sugar and oil together in a large bowl. You can use a large spoon for this and mix just until everything is well combined. Let the mixture sit for about 10-15 minutes so that the oats can soften up a bit.

Add the flour, salt, baking soda and baking powder and stir until fully combined but make sure not to over mix. If you mix too much at this point or use an electric mixer, you will likely have a more flat/dense bread than you want. Less is more when it comes to mixing quick breads! Gently fold in the chocolate chips.

Pour the batter into a well greased bread pan and bake at 325° for about 50-55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in the pan for about 15-20 minutes and then remove from pan and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Slice, serve and enjoy!

Can Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Bread be made into muffins?

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Muffins are our favorite muffins! Simply use my recipe above, then spoon 3 tablespoons of batter into each greased or lined muffin cup. Bake for 18-20 minutes at 400°.

There are several benefits of making quick bread into muffins. First, I like that they cook faster! Where a full loaf of oatmeal chocolate chip bread bakes for almost an hour, the muffins bake for less than 20 minutes, which is a fraction of the time. There’s no need to slice muffins either and of course, they’re very portable, so it’s easy to take them to a party or get-together. They’re also easy to freeze! I like to bake a batch of muffins and then freeze them just in a layer in a large ziplock freezer bag. I pull them out one or two at a time for breakfast. You can let them thaw on the countertop, or you can microwave them or toast them to heat them up.

Can Chocolate Chip Oatmeal bread be frozen?

I love freezing loaves of oatmeal chocolate chip bread! How you prepare the bread for freezing really depends on how long you intent to keep it frozen. If you just want to freeze it for a week or two, I’d wrap it in plastic wrap or foil and place the loaf in a large freezer ziplock bag. Most often, when I bake bread to freeze it, I’ll bake mini loaves so that they fit in the ziplock bag easier. If you want to freeze it for 2-6 months, I’d wrap it more securely, making sure it’s airtight and wrapping it in a double layer of foil or plastic wrap, then place it in a ziplock bag.

Raspberry Jello Poke Cake is a simple yet flavorful cake recipe. White cake infused with raspberry jello topped with cream to make one memorable, easy poke cake!

Poke cakes became more popular a few years back so if you haven’t tried one, consider this a sign from the universe! They are not only so easy to throw together, the colors and flavors just simply can’t be beat!

Jello poke cakes are made by first having a base cake, classically vanilla but chocolate could work well, too! Once the cake has cooled, holes are poked into the cake with a fork before pouring unset jello onto the cake. The jello then sets in the fridge within the cake prior to serving. This gives the cake nice bursts of flavor!

You can use any jello flavor you’d like, my personal favorite is raspberry, though.

What is in Raspberry Jello Poke Cake?

  • White Cake: This can be a from-scratch white cake, a boxed cake mix that you’ve made or even a totally store bought white cake! As long as you have your favorite white cake (baked and cooled!), you are golden!
  • Raspberry Jello: you’ll need a little 3 oz package. Feel free to use sugar free if you’d like. You will need to mix up the jello according to package directions, so you’ll also need water.
  • Whipped Topping: frozen whipped topping or fresh whipped cream will be perfect to top this cake!
  • Raspberries: for garnish and only if you really want to. 😉

How long does my Poke Cake need to set for?

Typically you’ll want to let your jello and cake set for a good 3-4 hours prior to serving. This is perfect if you want to quickly get making the cake out of the way before focusing on your meal. If you are in a time crunch though, you can pop it in the freezer for 30 minutes to help quickly set the Jello. Just make sure to set a timer, because we just want the jello to set, not freeze the whole cake!

jello poke cakeCan I use different flavors of Jello for my Poke Cake?

Yes, yes, YES!! Have a favorite? Use it!! I am all about getting creative in the kitchen! I think using orange jello mix to make a creamsicle type cake would be ta-die-for. I’m also wanting to play around with a chocolate cake with raspberry Jello mix. Doesn’t that just sound incredible? This method can be used in endless variations!

Does Jello Poke cake need to be refrigerated?

Yes, this does need to be stored in the fridge. The jello and the whipped topping need to be stored in the refrigerator so they don’t spoil. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and store in the fridge for up to 4 days. You can freeze the cake in individual pieces, if desired.

Can you use real whipped cream instead of whipped topping?

If you can’t find Cool Whip, which is the brand name of whipped topping where you live or you prefer not to use it in recipes, you can use stabilized whipped cream instead. If you just use regular whipped cream, the consistency will be too light and the cream will not hold up very well after a while on the cake. It’s very simple to make your own stabilized whipped cream and it just takes a few minutes!

Read more about How to make Whipped Cream here!

jello poke cakeHow do you make stabilized whipped cream?

To make stabilized whipped cream, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 4 ounces of cream cheese (softened to room temperature)
  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream.
  1. Beat the cream cheese with the powdered sugar and vanilla until soft and smooth.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the whipping cream just until soft peaks form.
  3. Add the cream cheese mixture to the whipped cream and beat until stiff peaks are formed. Store in the refrigerator until ready to use.

A little tip for making whipped cream faster. Use a metal bowl for whipping the cream and place the bowl in the freezer for about 30 minutes before you make the whipped cream. This will significantly decrease the amount of time that you will need to beat the whipped cream – the process will go much faster!
