Honey Glazed Chicken Wings are baked, then smothered with a delicious sweet honey glaze. Simple baked chicken wings recipe are literally finger-lickin’ good!

These baked chicken wings are crispy on the outside and tender and juicy on the inside. The simple, 4-ingredient glaze adds an array of flavors- smoky, sweet and just enough spice to make your taste buds happy.

How long to bake chicken wings in the oven

Chicken wings will take about 40-45 minutes to bake in the oven. When your meat thermometer reaches 165º in the thickest part of the meat, then you can know it is cooked.

My all-time favorite meat thermometer is the Thermapen. It’s super fast and incredibly durable. Another great meat thermometer is the ThermoPop which is a more basic version that works just as well!

How do you make honey glaze?

To make the honey glaze, you combine honey, soy sauce, hot sauce (if you like it spicy) and your favorite barbecue sauce in a mixing bowl. That’s it!

When your chicken wings are done baking, you just transfer them in a medium sized bowl and pour the glaze on top of them. So easy!

how to bake chicken wingsCan baked chicken wings be pink?

The only real indicator of when chicken is fully cooked is temperature. When your meat thermometer reaches 165º in the thickest part of the meat, then you can know it is cooked. Sometimes, the meat near the bone is slightly pink. As long as the internal temperature registers 165 degrees F, the meat is done.

Easy Grilled Teriyaki Chicken

If you are looking for a simple and delicious marinade recipe, look no further. This no fail marinade makes the most perfect grilled chicken each time I use it. It is our go to recipe for a quick weeknight meal and we have even used it to impress whole groups of friends at neighborhood barbecues!!

ingredients for teriyaki chicken

Teriyaki Chicken Marinade ingredients

For this recipe, you will only need 3 simple ingredients, really this couldn’t be any easier!! You will be surprised at how much flavor comes from this marinade!

  • lemon lime soda
  • vegetable or olive oil
  • soy sauce

That’s it!! This makes enough marinade for up to 6 chicken breasts.

How to Make Teriyaki Chicken

To make this simple Teriyaki Chicken, place the marinade ingredients in a zip top bag, or large plastic container with a lid. Place the chicken in the bag and make sure it is all covered. The chicken can be in the marinade for up to 6 hours before cooking. Store the marinading chicken in the refrigerator until you are ready to grill. I usually flip the chicken a few times throughout the day to make sure it is evenly distributing the marinade.

How to Grill Teriyaki Chicken

When you are ready to grill, remove the chicken from the marinade to a plate and discard the used marinade.

  • Preheat your grill to 350-375ºF
  • Place the chicken on the grill and cook for 10-12 minutes on each side.
  • The best way to know if your chicken is fully cooked is to use a thermometer. The internal temperature of the chicken should reach 165ºF. If you don’t have a thermometer cook the chicken until it is no longer pink inside.
  • Allow the chicken to rest for 5-7 minutes before slicing to allow the juices to redistribute, this will help the chicken to stay nice and juicy!

Can this Teriyaki Chicken be Baked in the Oven?

If you don’t have access to a grill to make this Teriyaki Chicken Recipe, you can cook this in the oven. Heat your oven to 350ºF and bake for 20-25 minutes, until chicken reaches 165ºF or is completely cooked through.

Can I use Chicken Thighs in this Teriyaki Recipe?

You can absolutely use chicken thighs in this Teriyaki Recipe. Chicken thighs will take a little bit longer to grill and come up to temperature. Just follow the recipe the same and marinate for up to 6 hours. Chicken thighs are always great to grill because they come out tender and juicy, leave the skin off or remove it.

Lemon Lime Soda for Tenderizing Chicken

The lemon lime soda in this recipe works twofold. First, it’s a sweetener for the teriyaki flavor for the chicken. Other recipes call for brown sugar or honey, but we use lemon lime soda. Second, the soda tenderizes the chicken!  Soda has just enough acidity to break down and tenderize chicken while adding flavor. You’ve got to try it!

Can I use Diet Soda?

I wouldn’t recommend using diet lemon lime soda in this teriyaki chicken recipe because the soda serves two purposes, one being to add a sweet flavor. Diet sodas are less sweet, so they’re not a good idea for this recipe.

Can I use Reduced Sodium Soy Sauce?

Yes, you can use reduce sodium soy sauce in this grilled teriyaki chicken recipe. The flavor will be similar, but it will have less salt.

How do you know when chicken is done cooking?

Chicken breast is done when the internal temperature of chicken reaches 165ºF.  It’s best to take the chicken off the grill when it reaches 162-163ºF. The chicken will continue to cook after it’s take off the grill. You can take the chicken off the grill, then let sit under foil to cook to a safe internal temp.

Honey glazed chicken breast

Editor’s Note: First published July 19, 2014, Updated photos, edited and expanded the text and last but not least, renamed. The original recipe was called honey crusted and glazed is more accurate to me.

This one is easy to do and will become the favorite recipe for many backyard grillers. Fire up the grill and have at it.

I don’t have an “inspired by” for this recipe. Maybe an email from Cooks Illustrated but that just triggered the idea. After reading many recipes, I jumped in.

My Rating
My rating system. Great 5 out of 5

A 5 coming from my wife, who is usually lower than me. I’m at a low five. To get to a full five, you need to brine. See note below.

Pro Tips: Notes on Honey Glazed Grilled Chicken Breasts

To Brine or Not To Brine

Like all skinless chicken breasts grilled, there was some dryness,  not much but a brine would make it a full 5.

A suggested brine would be two cups water and one tablespoons table salt for an hour or two. If you brine, then rinse and skip the salt before brushing with the honey mixture.

1 teaspoon table salt = 1 1/4 teaspoon Morton kosher salt = 2 teaspoons Diamond Crystal kosher salt

The Size and Thickness of the Chicken

The size of the breasts is also important. Try not to use those huge thick breasts. With a sugar type glaze, you will end up burning the outside before the inside gets to the safe 165 temperature.

using a meat mallet to even out the chicken

If the thickness of the breasts is over 3/4 inches, get out the meat mallet and get them down to about 3/4 inch thick. If you don’t have a mallet, then the bottom of a heavy pan will do. It doesn’t have to be exact but close, please.

The Grill

Finally, grill surface temperature at about 450 degrees. You must be able to know the temperature you are cooking at to be successful doing any grilling.

I think most grilling failures are due to people driving blind. If you closed your eyes and tried to drive around the block, you probably would not be very successful. You need the information from your eyes to be successful.

Get a surface thermometer. Go to Amazon or your local hardware store and spend your $10. You will save many times that in ruined food. While you are there, get an instant-read thermometer, also.

See A Beginners Guide to Grill Temperature on a Gas Grill  for a complete discussion.
