Halloween Spider cookies

Hey! Sarah from Feeding Your Fam here to creep you out with this easy Halloween Cookie recipe! This is such a fun cookie to make for your family or Halloween parties!! These look like you may need to be an artist to make, but trust me, they are easy and you don’t need to be a professional to pull these Spider Cookies off!!

How to make The BEST Chocolate Chip Cookies:

After trying out multiple chocolate chip cookie recipes over many years, I have picked up several important tips for making the absolute BEST cookies!

Halloween Spider Cookies are so much fun to make! A classic cookie recipe takes a creepy turn with a giant chocolate spider on top!

  • Make sure that you have enough flour in the dough. If the dough is too sticky, you may need to add a little bit of flour.
  • Spend a little extra time when you mix the butter and sugars. Creaming them together for 2-3 minutes will improve the consistency of your cookies.
  • Preheat the oven. This will help your cookies turn out right every time!
  • Use a cookie scoop! If you want all your cookies to be perfectly shaped and have them all be the same size, a cookie scoop is the way to go.
  • Use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat. Doing this will make it really easy to remove the cookies from your cookie sheet so that you don’t have to scrape them off the pan – they will just slide right off in perfect shape!
  • Don’t over bake the cookies – when I take mine out of the oven, they still look slightly under baked but they will continue to bake on the cookie sheet for a couple more minutes so that’s ok!

Why do my cookies burn on the bottom but aren’t done in the middle?

If your cookies are always burning on the bottom, it is probably a cookie sheet issue! If you are using really dark cookie sheets, the bottoms of your baked goods will tend to burn before they are actually cooked all the way through. If you use a lot of cooking spray, the same result can happen. I prefer to use lighter colored non-stick pans so that I don’t have to use cooking spray at all. As mentioned above, I have been converted to silicone baking mats over the last couple of years and I love how easy it is for cookies to come off the tray – no sticking ever!

How to make Spider Chocolate Chip Cookies?

First, preheat your oven to 350ºF.

Start by mixing together the butter, sugars, egg and vanilla until they are well combined. In a separate bowl whisk together the flour, baking soda and salt.

Now, mix the flour mixture with the creamed butter and sugars. Add the flour in about 1 cup at a time and mix in between.

Add in the chocolate chips and stir to combine. The dough should be soft and not sticky.

Using a cookie scoop, drop the cookie dough onto an ungreased or parchment lined cookie sheet. If you don’t have a cookie scoop, you can use two spoons to scoop up the dough and place it on the cookie sheet.

Place the cookies about 2 inches apart as they will spread while baking.

Bake the cookies for 8-10 minutes, until golden around the edges.

Remove the cookies from the oven and place on a cooling rack. While the cookies are still warm start building your spiders.

Place one large chocolate melting wafer for the body and one chocolate chip for the head on the warm cookie. The chocolate will melt making it easy to draw out the spider legs.

drawing a spider on a cookie with melted chocolate and a toothpick

Dip the tip of a toothpick into the melted chocolate body of the spider, use this to draw out the legs of the spider on the top of the chocolate chip cookie. Continue dipping into the chocolate to make all of the legs. The dipping chocolate works best for drawing on the legs, just let the chocolate chip melt to become the head of the spider.

To make the eyes for these Spider Chocolate Chip Cookies, simply drop a few sprinkles into the melted chocolate chip head of the spider. This is totally optional, these spider cookies still look creepy crawly without eyes.

Why are my cookies flat?

If your chocolate chip cookies are flat and spread out too much while baking, you may need to add a little bit more flour. Start by just adding a few tablespoons of flour to the batter and see if that is enough to help the shape of your cookies.

Should I use butter or shortening in my cookies?

I’ve made great chocolate chip cookies with butter and I’ve made great cookies with shortening – both can work very well! This particular chocolate chip cookie recipe uses butter but many of the other chocolate chip cookie recipes I’ve tried have called for shortening. My other favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe calls for butter-flavored shortening which makes them absolutely amazing. For a long time, I wasn’t very happy with any of the recipes I tried that used butter so I began to think that shortening was the key to perfect chocolate chip cookies. Until I found this recipe!

Halloween Cookie Decorating

I know I am not the only one who likes to make desserts that coincide with holidays. Halloween is no different. Whether this means rolling and cutting sugar cookies and carefully decorating with royal icing or simply making spooky chocolate covered pretzels, we are cut from the same cloth and can officially be friends.

For me personally, the majority of the time simplicity wins. Can I tell you how simple Sprinkle Cookies are? Sprinkles are my favorite way to decorate any cookie. The cookie immediately looks the part with no additional work! I call that a win!

Where is the best place to buy sprinkles?

I always buy sprinkles from my local grocery store’s bakery! I highly suggest looking into this. Not only do they always have great holiday mixes but are usually about half the price you would expect! When I purchased these black and orange sprinkles I paid $2.15 for 1 1/2 cups of sprinkles!

You can also find festive sprinkles on the baking aisle, or near the holiday section of your grocery store. Craft stores like Michael’s & Joann’s also have a great selection of holiday sprinkles!

How to make Halloween Sugar Cookies

To make the Sprinkle Cookies we will start with the cookie dough. Cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. You can do this with either a stand mixer or electric hand mixer. I tend to use my stand mixer but the choice is yours.

Make the Sugar Cookie Dough

After the butter and sugar is combined, add in the eggs and vanilla extract. This cookie has a great vanilla flavor you are going to love!

The last ingredients to go into the bowl are flour, baking powder and salt. Combine until the dough forms. The dough will be soft, you should be able to scoop and roll easily without the dough sticking to your hands, though.

Roll in sprinkles

Scoop, roll and then shake those sprinkles on! I just place the ball of dough in a bowl alongside the sprinkles and shake it until the cookie dough is covered with sprinkles.

Bake the Sprinkle Cookies

Bake at 350° for 9-10 minutes. To make sure that the cookies stay soft it is important to pull them out of the oven before they start turning brown on the edges. Just watch the tops of the cookies, pull them out when the tops are no longer glossy.

Allow the cookies to cool on the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire cooling rack.

PUMPKIN SPICE SNICKERDOODLE COOKIES – Butter with a Side of Bread by Gordon Ramsay

PUMPKIN SPICE SNICKERDOODLE COOKIES - Butter with a Side of Bread

Pumpkin Spice Snickerdoodles are a soft, pillowy vanilla cookie rolled in pumpkin pie spice & sugar before baking! Fun Fall twist to classic snickerdoodle cookie recipe!

pumpkin spice snickerdoodle cookies

What is a Snickerdoodle?

A classic Snickerdoodle cookie is a soft and chewy vanilla cookie that is rolled in Cinnamon and Sugar before baking. It’s signature chewy texture comes from adding either cornstarch or Cream of Tartar to the cookie dough.

If you love the classic Cinnamon and Sugar Snickerdoodle cookies, you are going to love these! This cookie is the perfect marriage of tender vanilla cookie and pumpkin spice flavor. This is a cookie like you’ve never had!

What Ingredients are in Pumpkin Spice Snickerdoodle Cookies?

Simple, everyday ingredients are all you need for the base of these Pumpkin Spice Snickerdoodle Cookies! Just take a peek! Specific measurements will be included below in the printable recipe card.

  • butter
  • sugar
  • egg
  • vanilla
  • baking powder
  • flour
  • cornstarch
  • pumpkin spice and sugar

How to make Pumpkin Spice Snickerdoodles

Pumpkin Spice Snickerdoodle cookies are made with the same method as most cookies. First, butter and sugar are creamed together until light in color and fluffy in texture. Next, vanilla and eggs go into the mix. After the eggs have been fully incorporated, add flour, baking powder, salt and corn starch. (The cornstarch helps keep them super soft!)

The dough will be very soft, but should be able to easily be scooped and rolled. Scoop and roll the dough into equal sized balls. I like to use a cookie scoop to achieve consistent results.

snickerdoodle cookies being rolled in sugar and pumpkin spice

Now, roll each cookie dough ball into a mixture of Pumpkin Pie Spice and Sugar, this subtle change from the classic snickerdoodle cookie will make all of the difference.

Arrange the cookies on a parchment lined cookie sheet (or be sure to spray the cookie sheet with non-stick spray!) and bake at 350° for 8-10 minutes. Make sure to take them out of the oven before they start turning brown to insure the perfect soft cookie.

How to store your Pumpkin Spice Snickerdoodle Cookies

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. If you’d like your cookies to last a bit longer, you can freeze them for up to 3 months. Be sure to pull them out of the freezer for 30 minutes before eating to bring them up to room temperature.

How to Freeze Pumpkin Spice Snickerdoodle Cookie Dough

If you’d like to freeze the dough before baking, I would suggest scooping the dough, rolling it in the pumpkin spice and sugar mix and then freezing the balls on a cookie sheet for about 1 hour. After the hour is over, you can then toss the cookie dough balls into a zip top bag without the cookie dough balls sticking to each other.

When you are ready to bake the cookies, arrange on the cookie sheet and let them sit at room temperature while your oven preheats. You will then bake as usual.

Do you have to have Cream of Tartar for Snickerdoodles?

Cream of Tartar is one of the ingredients that gives Snickerdoodles its distinct flavor & texture. It makes it so that these cookies don’t just taste like sugar cookies with a cinnamon sugar coating. The flavor is unique and fairly difficult to replicate. Nevertheless, if you’re out and don’t want to run to the store, you can substitute corn starch or baking powder instead, being as baking powder actually contains Cream of Tartar!
