Chocolate Caramel Apples are just as easy to make as the traditional caramel apples, but add a bit of chocolate flavor which is always a good idea! I don’t know why I never even thought about melting Milk Duds to make caramel apples, but it is so easy and the taste is absolutely amazing! Milk Duds are one of my favorite candies and they melt down just as easily as regular caramels, plus you don’t have to unwrap all those little plastic wrappers!

We make caramel apples every year around Halloween time and it was fun to change it up a little bit this year! The chocolate/caramel combination is incredible and pairs so nicely with fresh, crisp apples – this is the perfect fall treat!

What kind of apples do you use for caramel apples?

My favorite variety of apple to use for caramel apples is a firm, slightly tart apple like Granny Smith. These tart green apples balance out the sweet toppings perfectly. My personal favorite type of apple are Honeycrisp, so that is what I usually use. Fuji apples work great too!

How do you melt the caramel to make caramel apples?

I usually microwave the caramels (or in this case, Milk Duds!) in 30-second intervals, stirring in between each interval. I like using a microwave because it is so fast and easy this way! You can also melt the caramels/Milk Duds on the stove, using a heavy saucepan and cooking over medium-low heat. Make sure to stir nearly constantly while cooking and stir until completely melted and smooth.

How to make Chocolate Caramel Apples

  1. Wash and dry apples, remove stems. Insert stick into stem end of apple and set aside. In a glass bowl, combine Milk Duds, milk, butter and vanilla.
  2. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between each interval until the mixture is completely melted and smooth. Make sure the mixture is extremely hot – the hotter it is, the thinner the mixture will be and the easier it is to coat the apples.
  3. Dip apples in the caramel mixture using a spoon to help coat the apples evenly. Place coated apples on wax paper and let stand until the candy coating firms up. Enjoy!

What is an easier way to dip caramel apples?

Caramel apples are pretty easy to dip if you stick a craft stick into the top before dipping. The stick provides an easy handle that helps you to coat the entire apple without getting the caramel all over your fingers! Sometimes caramel apples can be difficult to eat when they are whole, so you can slice the dipped apple right before serving. Another thing I like to do is slice the apples and just serve them along with the caramel as a dip! No matter how you decide to dip and serve your caramel apples, they will be delicious!

What kinds of toppings do you put on caramel apples?

Immediately after you dip the apples in caramel, it can be fun to add all kinds of different toppings. Some of my favorite ideas are sprinkles, crushed up candy bars (Snickers, Kit Kats, Milky Way, etc), or crushed up Oreo cookies. Just place the toppings on a plate and roll the freshly dipped apple in the topping until coated evenly. Once the caramel coating sets, you can also drizzle the apples with melted white chocolate, marshmallow or peanut butter as a yummy decoration!
