What To Expect At My Book Signings

I just found out that tonight’s book signing (Oct 22) will have “tickets”. When you arrive at Barnes and Noble, go to Customer Service and tell them you are there for my book signing. They will give you a numbered ticket and you can shop around the store, grab a bite to eat, or just goof off until your number group is called. If you are out of the store and miss your number group, just check in when you get back and they’ll get you right up there! I’m so excited about this! No standing around in a long line!

Also, anything you purchase tonight, as long as it is purchased with Come Home To Supper, will have a portion of the proceeds go to Manna House. Buy that latte guilt free because you’re doing a great thing!

*Please note, outside books are welcome. You don’t have to purchase your book at B&N but there will be plenty available there should you want to!

In October of 2010, I parked my car at the Books a Million in Huntsville, Alabama, turned off the ignition and turned to my friend Jyl.

“Think anyone is here?” I asked.

“Oh, I’m sure people are here.” She replied.

“Well, what do you think we should do? Do we go in and find the manager? Reckon there is a table set up or something?”

Jyl shrugged. “I don’t have any idea.”

“Have you ever been to a book signing before?” I asked in a hopeful voice.

“Naw, I figured you had.” She replied.

We got out of the car and walked slowly to the door. I called my husband, who had arrived a few minutes ahead of me and asked him if anyone was there. He laughed at me and told me not to worry. As I reached for the door I said to Jyl “Well, I reckon we are fixin’ to find out how a book signing works.” I opened the door to see a line around the store with hundreds of people, who all smiled when they saw me. My first thought was “I wonder if there is another book signing here tonight, too.”

There wasn’t

On the chance that you’ve never been to a book signing either, I thought I’d share with you how my book signings work. I have no idea how other ones work so I’m just gonna give you my personal experience.

There is generally a table set up with books and sharpies (those are for me, but I always bring my own just in case!) and folks line up near the table. A lot of people get there early so I try to get there early, too!

Signings generally last about two hours, but I stay until the last person is gone, and I have often moved outside to the sidewalk to finish chatting and signing long after the store has closed – I have no problem with that!

I make sure I get to visit with each person, which is why I try to arrive early to allow for extra time. I’ll gladly sign anything you like, it doesn’t have to be just my current book. Folks have brought magazines I’ve been in, other books I’ve written, even dishpans and laptop computers for me to sign! I enjoy the creative things people come up with

What to wear:

Whatever falls out of the closet first. Please don’t ever get dressed up for me. I’m just there to see your smiling face and get my hug.

Do I need a babysitter?

Absolutely not! Children are ALWAYS welcome wherever I am and they bring sheer joy to any event. The lines may get long so be sure and bring something to entertain them if they get bored easily, or “borrow” a few books from the children’s section in the book store . Once they get up to my table, I always have a little treat to thank them for their patience.

Do I need to buy a book at the event?

You know, book stores appreciate it but it is absolutely not necessary. Outside books are welcome at almost all stores, especially the chain ones. If there is a store that I will be at which decides not to allow outside books, please know that this is not my policy and I will do my best to arrange another time while I am in that area to sign your book so just holler at me. I don’t currently have any of those stores on my schedule that I know of though, but I’ll tell you ahead of time if that changes. As far as I’m concerned, if you want my autograph and I’m able to give it, you’re gonna have it!

*Note Barnes and Noble always welcomes outside books.

Can I ask your family members to sign my book?

They’d be plum tickled! I am writing this on October 22, 2013 and tonight’s book signing will be the big debut where my parents, husband, aunt and uncle, and even kids will be there. They would all be thrilled to sign your books so please feel free to ask. The exception, of course, is the kids. They will sign as many as they can until they get wore out from it and have to go home to finish homework and get ready for bed. As far as adults go, put ‘em to work! They’re happy to do it! Most book signings will just be me so if you can make it to the October 22 signing at Barnes and Noble in Jones Valley – Huntsville Alabama (7:00 PM) that would be the one to go to

What can I do while I wait?

THIS IS THE BEST PART! I’m telling you, Southern Plate readers are some of the BEST people on the planet. At my Dallas book signing, I was running late (Dallas traffic is horrendous) and all the folks there started playing games and pretty much having a party! When I showed up, they were laughing and carrying on so much I felt like I was interrupting, lol. So be sure and  get to know the person beside you and I’m sure you’ll find a fast friend! Just look at it as a big old family reunion and you get to meet your extended cousins!

What to bring tonight:

Your smiling face

Your book (if you’ve already bought one, if not they are available for sale)

Any other books or magazines (or dishpans, or rolling pins, or anything else) you would like me to sign

If you’d like: Canned Goods to donate to Manna House to help other Families Come Home To Supper, this is optional.

That’s it! I’m so looking forward to meeting you at tonight’s or any other book signings. I’ve been waiting so long!

Gratefully,

Christy

If you do see me coming near you and would like to come out, though, I’d love to see you!

As I’m not a big traveler (My heart is at home) I will likely not pass these ways again and I’d hate to miss a chance to hug your neck .

In the meantime, if you’d like an autographed book plate custom designed to match the book, I’ll be happy to send you one! These have a peel away backing that allow you to stick it inside your book in order to make it an autographed copy.

All have been hand signed by me and will be sent out by my mother.

Pumpkin Praline Cake

Today I am excited to be able to bring you a recipe from Miss Suzanne Schrimsher, the amazing woman behind Suzanne’s Bakery and Eatery in Athens, Alabama. Her bakery is known for their wonderful plate lunches each day as well as the amazing desserts (anything from Suzanne’s kitchen is amazing though!). I love to stop in there for lunch whenever I happen to be in town and I was lucky enough to get to try a piece of this cake last time I was in there, which makes me even more excited that I have the recipe to share with you! After you read this, if ya have time, go drop Suzanne a “hidy” over on her Facebook page and tell her Christy sent ya

I am living proof that dreams really do come true.  October 17 of this year will be 8 years of living a dream.  My name is Suzanne Schrimsher and “Suzanne’s Bakery and Eatery” on East Forrest Street in Athens, Alabama is the dream I am living.

Over 8 years ago, I had just lost my job, was in the middle of a nasty divorce and I thought that my world would never be a happy place again.  Enter my friends Mike and Nikki Ogles.  Mike and I started First Grade together at Athens Bible School, went on to graduate together (too many years ago to count), and have worshiped together for many years.

To make a long story short, Mike and Nikki went far beyond the scope of friendship and offered to help start the business that I had dreamed of for years. (A dream that Mike and I had even discussed as far back as high school when he and other boys would sneak into the home-ec building and eat what the girls had made for home work.)  So many friends and family have helped and encouraged me over this 8 year journey – some volunteering their time to make this a reality.  The bakery has been a first job for several teenagers around town – including my two girls, Emily and Erin, and my nephew Ethan.  It has been a gathering place for friends and family and has been a lifeline for me.

Mike and Nikki are no longer my partners at the bakery- family and work commitments have taken them in a different direction. But, I still worship with them every week and they are two of my biggest fans and cheerleaders.  And I love them more than I know how to say.

Dreams do come true, and I’m thrilled to share one of my recipes with you on Southern Plate today. If you’re in my area, I’d love to get to meet you, too! Just drop by Suzannes when ya can!

I love fall…the cool, crisp mornings, the threat of frost in the air, beautiful trees, and going outside without breaking a sweat.  I love the thought of pumpkins, but have never been a huge fan of the taste and texture of pumpkin until this recipe.  It takes all the good things about fall and turns them into a scrumptious dessert that will leave you wanting “just one more piece”.

Here’s what you’ll need to make this wonderful dessert.  Any brand of these products works fine…I just used what I had on hand.

Mix the pumpkin, milk, eggs, sugar and cinnamon well.

Pour into a greased and floured 9×13 baking dish.

Sprinkle dry cake mix over the pumpkin layer.

Sprinkle pecans over the dry cake mix.  Pour melted butter (as evenly as you can) over the pecan layer.

Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes to 1 hour.  Cake is done when center is set.

Allow cake to cool completely.  Meanwhile, make the topping.

Mix cream cheese and powdered sugar well.

Add whipped topping and mix well.

Spread topping over the cooled cake.

Dig in!

This cake lasts well, covered and refrigerated.

And a shout out to you, Christy.  I’m sure you noticed my mixing bowls.  These vintage Cinderella yellow bowls (circa late 1970’s) were given to me a few years ago by a family member.  I LOVE using these for just about everything!

Ingredients

  • 15 ounce can of pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling)
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1 cup melted butter
  • 1 box butter recipe cake mix
  • 2 cups pecans
  • 16 ounces cream cheese (2 bricks, can use only one if you like)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 16 ounces Whipped Topping

Instructions

  1. Mix the pumpkin, milk, eggs, sugar and cinnamon well.
  2. Pour into a greased and floured 9×13 baking dish.
  3. Sprinkle dry cake mix over the pumpkin layer.
  4. Sprinkle pecans over the dry cake mix. Pour melted butter (as evenly as you can) over the pecan layer.
  5. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes to 1 hour. Cake is done when center is set.
  6. Allow cake to cool completely. Meanwhile, make the topping.
  7. Using an electric mixer, mix cream cheese and powdered sugar well.
  8. Add whipped topping and mix well.
  9. Spread topping over the cooled cake.
  10. Enjoy!
